Our New Vegetable Garden

The center completed a new accessible vegetable garden in the green space in front of our building this summer. Our center has been growing and adding new activities monthly and this vegetable garden is the newest unique activity we have. The garden is 16ft x 8ft and houses 80 sq ft of planting bed area .The inside is cut out and features pavers for a flat, open gardening area that continues to the parking lot. A trellis along the back of the flower bed will give growing vines a place to attach. The garden was designed and built by Fred Marsch from the Austintown Township Road Department. Fencing for Fun and Fitness

The sport of fencing is a fun and exciting way to stay fit and active. It has been part of every modern Summer Olympics and a fencing class is available here at the Austintown Senior Center! Fencing is not just for the young; it has many benefits for people of all ages including improving strength, coordination, aerobic conditioning, anaerobic conditioning, mental focus, mental agility and balance. An hour of fencing also burns approximately 400 calories for a 150-pound person (estimate by HealthStatus.com). Balance is one of the most important of these benefits to older people. Broaden Your Knowledge

Ever heard of the phrase “It is never to late to learn something new”? Well, this philosophy is in full effect at the Austintown Senior Center. We have a variety of engaging and interesting classes available to our members, but one class will broaden your knowledge beyond most activities, that class is our “Great Courses” lectures. Every morning we offer a different video lecture based on what the senior’s attending want to learn. We have the whole Great Courses library to choose from, with topics ranging from science, history, travel, health and wellness, photography, cooking, and many more.
